A job with the federal government is an ideal place for a certified coder. A position with the Veteran’s Health Administration offers various opportunities for employment.

The VHA accepts applicants with credentials from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). The application process with the government is a long process. The federal government will require more than your resume to satisfy their application. Applicants should be prepared to submit a college transcript for verification. They will also require some additional government forms to be submitted, including a background check.

Although this process can be tedious to complete, a position with the VHA can be beneficial to you. The federal government provides a great benefit package. The salaries vary per region, but the increases can be higher than civilian paying positions. The hierarchy of a VA salary is different from a civilian job due to the government pay scale along with your level of experience. For instance, a candidate with a CCS-P, associate degree and 2 yrs of experience can receive a higher level of pay for the advertised position versus someone certified with less experience and education.
